What you'll do

The Lemosho Route is favored for its low traffic, stunning scenery, and high summit success. It starts with a drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate, then two days in lush rainforests to Shira Plateau. We suggest 7-8 days for better acclimatization. It merges with the Machame Route at Shira 2 Camp, following the same path to Mweka Gate.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival at Kilimanjaro's Gateway

Upon our arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, we're escorted to Moshi. This day offers us leisure to explore Moshi or relax, setting the stage for our collective trek. An evening briefing and gear check to ensure we're fully prepared for the ascent. We set two pick-up times: 10 AM or 3 PM. So we recommend arriving at one of these two times.

Day 2 - Lemosho Glades (2,385 m) to Big Tree Camp (2,780 m)

You will be picked up around 8 AM. We journey from Lemosho Glades (2,385 m / 7,825 ft) through emerald forests to Big Tree Camp (2,780 m / 9,121 ft), marking our first night under Kilimanjaro's gaze. Distance: 7 km (4.3 mi) | Elevation Gain: +395 m (+1,296 ft) | Time: 3-4 hours

Day 3 - Big Tree Camp to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)

Ascending to Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m / 11,483 ft), we traverse grassy moorlands inspired by the grandeur of Kibo Peak. Distance: 16.5 km (10.3 mi) | Elevation Gain: +720 m (+2,362 ft) | Time: 9-11 hours

Day 4 - Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m)

Our path through the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp (3,900 m / 12,795 ft) offers a glimpse into the mountain’s vast landscapes and unique ecosystems. Distance: 8 km (5 mi) | Elevation Gain: +400 m (+1,312 ft) | Time: 5-6 hours

Day 5 - Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960 m)

We ascend to the Lava Tower (4,640 m), then descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m / 12,992 ft), encircled by towering cliffs with expansive views below. Distance: 10 km (6.2 mi) | Elevation Gain: +740 m (+2,428 ft) -680 m (-2,231 ft) | Time: 6-7 hours

Day 6 - Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (3,963 m)

Tackling the Barranco Wall, we reach Karanga Camp (3,963 m / 13,002 ft), where an optional acclimatization hike awaits the eager among us. Distance: 5.5 km (3.4 mi) | Elevation Gain: +290 m (+952 ft) -277 m (-909 ft) | Time: 5-6 hours

Day 7 - Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)

Ascending the barren slopes to Barafu Camp (4,640 m / 15,223 ft), we prepare for our summit attempt, focusing on rest and hydration. Distance: 3 km (1.9 mi) | Elevation Gain: +677 m (+2,221 ft) | Time: 3-4 hours

Day 8 - Summit Day, Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) and Down to Millennium Camp (3,790 m)

Our midnight trek to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,340 ft) challenges us, rewarding our efforts with sunrise at Africa’s summit before descending to Millennium Camp (3,790 m / 12,434 ft). Distance: 13.4 km (8.3 mi) | Elevation Gain: +1,255 m (+4,117 ft) -2,105 m (-6,906 ft) | Time: 12-15 hours

Day 9 - Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate (1,630 m)

Descending through the rainforest, we reflect on our shared journey, culminating in a celebratory gathering in Moshi. Distance: 12.1 km (7.5 mi) | Elevation Gain: -2,160 m (-7,087 ft) | Time: 6-7 hours

Day 10 - Departure day

We leave Moshi, carrying the memories and achievements of our trek, ready for our onward journeys. Depending on flight times, you could explore Moshi town. We recommend leaving after dinner and having the last celebration together with the guide.
